The start of the 2016 award season went off with a showbiz bang! Funny man Ricky Gervais presented the 73rd Annual Golden Globes, with the event proving to be a star-studded and stylish evening. Viewers were treated with an array of global celebrities from the film, television and music industries. The red carpet at the event is always a mixed bag of breath-taking outfits, surprise guests and complete fashion fails. This year was, of course, no exception.

Winner of Best Actress in a Comedy or Musical for her acclaimed role in the film Joy, Jennifer Lawrence looked stunning in a red gown by her go-to designer, Christian Dior. With slicked hair and 156 carats of Chopard diamonds tied in with a matching red lip, JLaw looked radiant. She embodied everything it means to be a movie star and still doesn’t take herself too seriously; I mean her best friend is Amy Schumer.

Lady Gaga also happened to grace the event. It’s shocking, considering she wasn’t inside an egg or wearing raw meat. However, Gaga clearly doesn’t need all those gimmicks because she stunned audiences with her classic Hollywood film siren, black Versace gown.

Taraji P. Henson, star of the Fox drama Empire, looked fierce but elegant in a Stella McCartney gown while she worked the red carpet like it was a Vogue photo shoot. Henson gave a memorable speech of the night, accepting the award for Best Actress in a Drama Series. When told to wrap up, Henson stated, “I’ve waited 20 years for this, you’re going to wait!”

Australian acting treasure, Cate Blanchett, who was nominated for her role in the critically acclaimed film Carol, stunned viewers in a fringed Givenchy dress. The elegant yet somewhat edgy look landed Blanchett on both the best and worst dressed lists across the board; however, she seems to have an ability to pull off unique outfits with ease and sophistication, making her interesting to watch on the red carpet.

I’m not entirely sure why Disney and singing star, Zendaya was at the event. Personally I think it’s because everything she wears turns to gold. The 18-year-old starlet looked exuberant in this tiered Marchesa gown.

Everyone was looking for a powerhouse couple on the red carpet, and my best (even though there wasn’t much competition) choice was Jenna Dewan-Tatum in a striking Zuhair Murad gown, with her best accessory, her handsome-as-always husband, Channing Tatum. The only problem I have with their style was Channing’s ridiculous hairstyle, which led to comparisons to Justin Bieber.

The only couple that could possibly go up against the Tatum’s on this red carpet were Olivia Wilde, in a custom sequined gown by Michael Kors, and husband funny man Jason Sudeikis. Everything about this couple is adorable, except for those Air Jordans Sudeikis decided to wear. It seems that both Channing and Jason need to rethink a few things before the next red carpet.

With the good comes the ugly, and there was plenty of it. A notable fail was America Ferrera’s ‘yolk’ yellow disaster of a gown from designer Jenny Packham. The entire look left Ferrera looking very “high school prom”.

Unfortunately, Bryce Dallas Howard arrived in another train wreck design by Jenny Packham. Walking her first Globes red carpet ever, Dallas Howard donned a look by the designer she had purchased at a department store due to limited options for a size six. While the dress does have some visual appeal, unfortunately it falls flat and looks unflattering.

Kate Hudson is always one to look out for because she is too stunning to miss. This year, however, I wouldn’t have mind. Hudson wore a body-flaunting gown by Michael Kors and I won’t lie, she does look gorgeous. However, I feel the dress would be more suited for a Malibu beach house party rather than an awards show.

Regina King the acclaimed star from American Crime, has to be my worst dressed of the evening. Unfortunately, King’s Krikor Jabotia gown is too over-the-top for me. She looks like she is wearing full body armour and paired with a light, floaty cape, it almost seems like I’m looking at two different gowns.

But who is my best dressed, you may ask? I had a bit of difficulty deciding and I juggled with a few options. I have come down to my top two best looks of the night. Coming in second, supermodel-turned-actress, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley of course looked stunning in her sequined, delicate gold couture gown by Atelier Versace. She had two accessories on the red carpet, her man Jason Statham and her gorgeous new diamond engagement ring, which she so casually revealed to the world.

My best dressed is . . . Jaimie Alexander. The star of TV’s Blindspot knocked it out of the park in this daring gown by Genny. The graphic pattern works with the gorgeous green which is matched by her earrings and ring. Paired with her dark features and perfect hair and make-up, Alexander looks ravishing.
