There’s No ‘Friends’ Reunion
When the NBC announced the tribute special for Burrows would include the cast of Friends, everyone was teeming with excitement as it meant there would be the long-awaited reunion. However, it looks as though this will not be the reunion everyone was imagining.
‘There’s no Friends reunion,’ David Schwimmer, who played Ross on Friends, explained to E!
‘It’s a tribute to Jimmy Burrows who we love and I’m just thrilled to be a part of it.’
What we can expect from the special has not been disclosed, not even to the actors: ‘I have no idea of what’s expected of us — I honestly don’t. I’m flying in that day, so I’m just showing up. From what I’ve been told from Sean Hayes [Will & Grace], we’re all going to come up on stage and talk about Jim and give him a hug,’ said Schwimmer.
Burrows played a pivotal role in the early days of Friends, having directed the pilot episode of the show as well as fourteen others across the ten seasons. His other works include Frasier, Will & Grace, Cheers and The Big Bang Theory. The special is to commemorate the airing of his 1000th episode.
‘As many of us that can be there will be there and the casts of so many shows are going to try to be there… This man is an incredible director who helped define situation comedy in this country in the last 40 years so I love him and I’m excited to be there,’ said Schwimmer.
After rumours of a supposed Friends reunion movie in early 2013, the show’s co-creator Martha Kauffman laid the rumours to rest on an interview with E! News: “It’s not happening!”. She further explained, “Friends was about that time in your life when your friends are your family and once you have a family, there’s no need anymore.”
Matt Le Blanc shares a similar view to Kauffman and stated to EW back in 2012: ‘I don’t want to see an old Joey… Everyone’s going to have different vision of what those characters are like, so to have that materialize is going to disappoint most people.’
However, fans of the show have been sated with mini ‘reunion’ appearances, with members of the cast having made numerous guest appearances in each other’s shows, particularly Matthew Perry on Courtney Cox’s Cougar Town. In more recent years there have been special appearances from some of the cast on the Ellen Show in 2013 and Jimmy Kimmel Live in 2014. However, an on-screen reunion with the six cast members is still the dream.
That dream is looking like it may remain a dream. With adamant refusal from both the co-creator and actors that a reunion is not happening, it look like Friends are never, ever, ever getting back together.
